A barcode is a practical tool and because of it the accounting operations are carried out during the supply and sale of goods. It is a sequence of black and white stripes that convey specific information in a form easy to read by technical means. Barcodes are assigned by the international non-profit and non-governmental organization known as the EAN (European Article Numbering), Association, established in 1977. In Ukraine, its functions are performed by the Association of Article Numbering “GS1 Ukraine” (formerly “EAN-Ukraine” until December 20, 2006), established in September 1994.
The GS1 system is an integrated system of global standards that ensures the accurate identification of goods, services, and trade partners. GS1 is created to enhance the processes of identification and accounting, as well as to organize information flows efficiently. This system is used in many manufacturing industries, including the public sector and trade.
Barcoding services of the GS1 Ukraine Regional Centre.
A number of current normative documents of Ukraine provides for obligatory marking of goods by bar codes. In particular, alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, medicinal products, samples of audiovisual works and phonograms, and other goods are subject to obligatory marking by bar codes. The need for bar code on the products is also predetermine by the needs of modern wholesale and retail enterprises. In these cases, the barcode becomes a practical tool for automating accounting operations for supplies and sales.
The Sumy Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the only official representative of the “GS1 Ukraine” Global Commodity Numbering System in our region. The barcode assigned to your good by the GS1 Ukraine Association, is valid in any country of the world (except the limited circulation numbers). Both legal entities and individual entrepreneurs can become members of the “GS1 Ukraine” Association.
Preparation of an introductory package of documents for barcoding goods.
According to the norms of the Global Commodity Numbering System , companies wishing to use barcodes for numbering, identification and automated reading of product information must become members of the national organisation “GS1 Ukraine”. A package of application documents required to obtain barcodes is available at the regional barcoding centre at the Sumy Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It includes: contract, supplementary agreement to the contract, a registration card of a member of the GS1 Ukraine system (it contains information about the legal and postal address of the manufacturer of the goods, statistical data, information about the goods in accordance with the State Standard of Ukraine (DSTU), Technical Specifications (TU), etc.), an application for barcode assignment.
The Supplementary Agreement to the contract determines the possibility of granting benefits on the entrance and membership fees for “GS1 Ukraine” members.
Assignment of product barcodes to current members of the “GS1 Ukraine” Association.
The experts of the “GS1 Ukraine” Regional Barcoding Centre carry out all the procedures necessary to obtain a barcode within 7 days from the date of signing the contract.
Assignment of a Global Location Number (GLN).
The GLN is used to identify any object (whether an individuals and legal entities) , that plays a specific role in supply processes and is utilized in electronic data exchange involving the use of standardized electronic messages.
Each enterprise – a stakeholder of the GS1 system has at least one GLN that identifies it as a legal entity. If necessary, an enterprise may receive more than one GLN.
